SIGIL PRESS Interview (2019)

DREADFUL RELIC INTERVIEW

ANSWERED  BY COMMANDO WOLF & HJARULV HENKER

Hails Commando Wolf! Thanks for accepting my interview request. Dreadful Relic may sound as new monicker to some (one demo and ep so far) but I am sure band lineup (Der Stürmer, Goatmoon, Lamentation...) needs no introduction. So I rather skip presentations and let's get started with the questions.

 1.  The recording of a new Dreadful Relic album was announced last August, it was supposed to be preceded by a 7" to be released last October (at Samhain). So what happened? I cannot find any info around, please update us about this.

C.WOLF : Yes that’s correct. The debut album was recorded during the summer of 2017 and all the files was delivered at NWN! Productions during September. The delay caused by GZ Media as they have a really full release schedule. But the wait is now over. The 7”Single is out since some weeks now!

2. What can we expect in your debut album? Do you have a release date yet?

C.WOLF : If everything goes with the plan and there will be not anymore delays the album will be released during February of 2018. CD, LP,TAPE plus some merch, all at the same time. Just keep an eye at dreadfulrelic.com for the announcements and exact dates.

3. Band members live in different countries (Greece/Finland/USA) Who is the main composer and how do you manage to put songs bits together?

C.WOLF : That was not intentional. Just happened. But its natural if you think how hard is for us to find like-minded individuals in Hellas. Coming to music, the main composer is Hjarulv. For the intros Desolate Wings works and record alone in his home studio in a cabin in the mountain woods of Marietta, Georgia (USA). As for the lyrical concept I`m writing everything by myself. Music is composed solely by Hjarulv Henker. Ofcourse later we exchange some ideas on both lyrics and music.

4. Will Dreadful Relic play any gigs? maybe some festivals?)

C.WOLF : DREADFUL RELIC already did a debut gig at the HOT SHOWER FEST that took place in April 2017 in Milan/Italy. Yes, its in our plans to continue to play gigs. Any intrested parties can contact us for details.

5."Archaic Conjugations" demo was a fucking blast. It sounds like it was recorded during the black metal early days when thrash was still a noticeable influence on many bands. Where it was recorded and what was the mood?

C.WOLF : ARCHAIC CONJURATIONS was our debut work and as you may understand we were after months to talking and planning, endless hour discussions that took place mostly while visiting various archaic sites, graves and mounds or bare hills and mountains all around Attica very huntry to realize our visions. The season we choose for the recording was the days around the All Hallows Eve of 2014. It was very significant to us the process of recording was something of a gesture towards the Spirits of the dead.

6. I love how greek bands took black metal their own way, I'm talking about early Rotting Christ, Varathorn, Thou Art Lord, Nergal, Kawir, Zephyrous... (Actually name of this blog is my tribute to old greek bm scene) Some people argue that its because of the orthodox tradition or the war periods that Greece suffered in the past, specially during WWII. How do you explain the uniqueness of greek black metal?

C.WOLF : I would like to know which people argue and give such explanation about it? Some leftist cunts probably. Newcomers who rightfully found Black Metal too cruel for them and want to lower it so to fit in their own pathetic "ideals". For sure, orthodox christianity had played a role in supressing the Hellenic spirit.

7. Was the nsbm in Greece an independent scene or you also hanged out with other black metal bands regardless of political orientation?

C. WOLF :  NSBM or not, there is very few people these days from the local scene that I hang out with.

8. I think this style of metal, evil, dark and heavy is better played by people who has been in lots of bands, has lots of records for instance bands like Eurynomos, Principality of Hell... people strongly influenced by Hellhammer, old-Sodom, old-Slayer... but not a copycat. So is "true" metal becoming an old-men-thing? Do you notice teenagers attending gigs and starting new bands as we did in the 90s?

C.WOLF : I have heard a couple of tracks from Principality of Hell and to be honest I found them boring and tiresome.  On the other hand EURYNOMOS released some really killer stuff! I`ve got all their EPs so far and I`m looking forward for their upcoming album.
I dont know what teenagers exactly do these days other than surfing all day, making selfies or be in the pursuit of the latest colour vinyl hunt on discogs.  Everything nowadays are more easy and at the same time more complicated. The veil of mysticism has been removed suddenly Black Metal turned into another music genre.

9. Your demo also includes an "Inner Sanctum" Celtic Frost version. "Bronze Effigy of Gorgoneion" also reminds me a lot of Tom G. Warrior and cia. So the next questions is pretty obvious. How did CF influenced you and how do you feel about Martin Eric Ain's passing?

C.WOLF ; HELLHAMMER/early CELTIC FROST is our biggest influence in DREADFUL RELIC. Music, aesthetics, lyrical concept. This ofcourse doesn`t mean that we will copy/paste their stuff on our own as someone might expect. Such timeless masterpieces simply give us inspiration and from there we doing our own thing. The sparkle so to speak that we make it into a huge bonefire.
Coming to Ain's death, I have no special feeling really. You know, people die daily and amongst them are people from bands as well.  CELTIC FROST had stopped since years, their latest album was unlistenable so I think as a band had nothing to offer. Since then , Martin Ain had at least step aside, instead of ridiculize himself going here and there, with guest appearences, tons selfie photos and similar modern facebook shit. Thats definitely shows a sense of dignity.

12. My other questions is related to cassette worship. I guess you did tapes trading with your friends back at the beginning but what do you think about this small-run tape worship? Some black metal bands just put out 10 copies, does it makes any sense?

C.WOLF : Perhaps you`ll find it strange, but was never into tape trading. Only when I was in my early years in the high-school I bought weekly a pack of 10 tapes which every Friday I was giving it to some guys in my class to record for me the latest demos/albums etc of BLACK/DEATH/THRASH METAL bands. Both Greek and international. In this was I discovered a lot of bands and albums. It was in this way that my life and worldview changed radically when I discovered BLACK METAL.

13. In the aforementioned 7" you are including "Rite of Cthulhu" Samael instrumental cover. What is your fave Samael album and which one do you listened for the first time?

C.WOLF : Yes, we recorded “Rite of Cthulhu” as an exclusive into “Combat Alchemist” 7”Single. Though, when you`ll listen it, you`ll realize that its more than a simple cover. It is our call and chants to the Ancient One sitting on the outmost corners of the beyond.
My fave SAMAEL album is without doubt “Worship Him” and I found about it (see previous questions) few weeks after it was released for first time. For me this is not just a good recording but marks a whole era and the beginning of a path that still to this day I walked at.

14. "Into the pentagram" has been covered a lot (Xantotol, Taranis being some of the best covers). While I find the version contained in "Rebellion" album pretty sterile even annoying, lets admit that earliest version on "medieval prophecy" sounds like a smashed potato. Metal elitists would go for demo sound the rawer the better you know (it has become a total posse these days), what type of sound do you prefer?

C.WOLF : I love the rawness of the early SAMAEL releases as to my ears they have the aura of a bastard HELLHAMMER offspring. The Sounds of haunted spirits moving in the shadows. But to my ears on "Worship Him" they captured the perfect sound. Coming to TARANIS &  XANTOTOL, I dont think that they simply did a cover. Both band's existance are totally influenced by SAMAEL. Personally I like a lot both bands. Especially XANTOTOL.
Now I heard from you that there is a later version. I have never heard “Rebellion” so far and I don’t plan to do so. For me Samael died in 1994.

15. The lyrics of your first demo include score of Conan The Barbarian film. One of the best soundtracks ever along with Lucifer Rising, Suspiria, Nosferatu, Bram Stoker's Dracula and many more... Tell us why this film is so important for you? What is the hidden meaning that you mentioned in a radio interview? (excellent btw) Your film interpretation is appreciated ;-)
(Funny fact: in Spain "Valhalla" was translated as "Valaha".)

HENKER : We haven’t used any samples or music from Conan the Barbarian, only some visual graphics and the aesthetics of that film. The important message of that movie is the fact that the Western man must return to his antediluvian roots of mercilessness IF he wants to survive! No modern philosophies, no logical interpretations, no limp-wristed politics, just fire and steel! Nowadays the West is entranced by ohlocracy and leftist humanitarian bollocks and it won’t take long until it falls into destruction!

16. "Warlords Of Cosmic Sovereign" is even more epic. Being my definition for epic as follows Manowar's first three albums, Bathory viking era and Conan the barbarian soundtrack. What would you add/ remove from this list?

C.WOLF : Nothing. All the things you mentioned even unconsciously played for sure their role, not only in “Warlords of…” but in all DREADFUL RELIC releases. Its stuff we grew up with and have strong roots within us, both in music and worldview as well.

17. Occult and fantasy (Lovecraft, Howard...) is strong influence on black metal obviously, what are your fav books?

C.WOLF : Hard to mention just a few books. My instrest in books has a really wide range. History, Esotericism, Philosophy, Dark Heroic Fantasy etc

18. As I told you, some of the DREADFUL RELIC band members come from very well know bands I am sure readers will notice but some of them may not be aware that you (vocals, bass) were the editor Wallachian Tyrant Zine and Isidoros (guitars) was the editor for Pesten zine and co-publisher for "Wrath of the Gods", "Dark Imperium" and "Heathen Pride". How do you see metal fanzine culture nowadays? Do you still read zines? Here we got some really good ones, but u/g metal zines are getting less each year. Which ones do you still read which ones are the best in your opinion?

C.WOLF : Yes ofcourse I still read zines.  Also, nowadays , more and more often I visit my old zines. Even the smell of old paper is alone a good reason to inspire you.
Coming to the zines nowadays, I`m glad that there is still people out there that still doing zines in the proper way. Some really good ones that i`ve got lately is TEROZIN, ZOMBI DANZ, DAMNATUS, VOICE OF THE NIGHT, ARCULA MYSTICA, SATAN'S SADIST, THE SINISTER FLAME, WITCHCRAFT,

19. Recently I spoke with from Nyogtha from Cult Of Eibon and he told me there is a reemergence of the u/g in Greece with "countless underground people that work and live like the old days." (Last 'zine I discovered was "Black Blood Magazine" by Hierophant's Descent bassist) Do you feel the same way?

C.WOLF : I don’t know the person you are talking about and never heard this band. I`m not an expert in the local scene but I seriously doubt that there is such situation that you described in your questions. There is only some fools, trendies and newcomers who think that they play something near to what they think that Black Metal is. In fact that it’s a just a parody of what the scene was about back in the early or mid 90s. Black Blood Magazine is an exception to all these ofcourse. Killer zine and with the proper spirit and dedication. I hope Jim will continue to do this. Also, anyone out there intrested in the TRUE Underground Black/Death scene of Hellas, watch out for NECRANASTASIS (1987-1997) book.

20. Wallachian Tyrant published 4 issues (from 95 to 2004) Some articles dealt with medieval Europe and esoteric NS. Thus I would like to ask you about this topic. I've been fascinated by Die Schwarze Sonne, Das Ahnenerbe, and Catharism for many years (I traveled a lot to l'Ariege and Montségur area) So I would like to know your views on the life and writings of Otto Rahn, specially on the "Luzifers Hofgesind" book.

C.WOLF:  Me too. In Black Metal,  its a mid-90s thing for sure. Occult History of The Third Reich (the book and documentary as well), Teutonic Brotherhood & Temple of the Fullmoon, The French scene ( Les Legions Noires, Funeral/Kristallnacht, Osculum Infame, Blutorden, Mircalla/Maldoror), the US scene (Grand Belials Key, Black Funeral, A View Into The Abyss & Crimson Arcainum zines)

21. What about Saint-Loup "Noveux Cathars per a Montségur"? It was published in french, catalan and spanish but I am not sure If there is a proper english or greek translation...

C.WOLF : No, as far as I know there is not any book of Saint-Loup published in Greek yet. All the knowledge I have about Cathars comes from Rahn’s “Kreuzzug Gegen Den Gral”

22. Any esoteric authors (not necessary within the ns circle) that you were influenced by?

Julius Evola, Otto Rahn, Guido Von List, Savitri Devi, Karl Maria Wiligut, Miguel Serrano, Carl Gustav Jung, Jorg Lanz von Liebenfels, William Butler Yeats and probably some more which I`m forgetting right now.

23. What do you think about the Armanenshaft, the folkish runologists and the possibility of germanic "qabalah" unbounded from any semitic roots (I know it sounds weird but that's actually what Armanens believed. Currently Swedish PhD Thomas Karlsson establishes a link between nordic and eastern esoteric/hermetic traditions. I think there are some similarities between the Tree of Life and Yggdrasill, the Sephiroth and the Nine worlds of Áatrú. What do you think?

HENKER : I am interested into the Armanik wisdom because it makes sense. I hate all these fucking smiling hippy pagans who have no clue about the Ancient customs and religions, and delve into “one-race, one world” bullshit laced with ecological anxieties. It’s obvious that the jewish cabala has stolen much of the wisdom of the folks that they encountered and adapted it to their monotheistic nonsense. Crowley uncovered much of this scam in his writings. Take for example the “qliphoth”, it’s an obvious misspell of the Hellenic work “qelyphos” which means “shell” - the Larvae! So yes, Armanism is closer to the ancient mysteries than any rune-casting fool! WAKE UP IDIOTS! RUNES ARE NOT TAROT!!!!!

24. Similar questions goes for paganism (2nd wave bm) / satanism (1st wave bm) influence on black metal. Do you think there is a link? if so please explain

C.WOLF : Ofcourse there is a link. Especially During the rise of the 2nd wave of Black Metal during the early 90s, the line seperating Paganism from Satanism was so thin that was hardly visible.

25. What about hindu/vedic myths, since post-jail Dissection it seems that it has become one of most explored spiritual paths within black metal scene (Cult Of Fire, Nåstrond, Genocide Shrines... at least at aesthetics surface level? Are you interested in any of this eastern belief systems?

C.WOLF : Not at all, and at times I found them totally alien to the Authentic European Traditions.

26. And last question on esoteric ns, "The Secret King" by Michael Moynihan and Stephen Flowers. Do you think this is the best introduction to Karl Maria Willigut work on runes?

C.WOLF : I have "The Secret King" since years now and I found it really intresting and informative as there are not so many books around that deal exclusively with the life and work of Weisthor. Even if I disagree in several parts of his worldview (Irminism vs Wotanism somehow reminds me the Catholic church schisms) , there is no doubt that he was a fascinating character with many inspiring works such as Gotos-Kalanda and the Runic Poetry.

27. Now let's back to metal related questions. This is a pretty obvious but also an unavoidable question, What means black metal to you and how much do you feel it has changed from its original form/spirit/purpose?

Black Metal plays the 2nd most important role to my life with the first being my ideals. The one lead to the other.
For me BLACK METAL was always something that I took very seriously. Something I realized even back in the days that I was a neophyte. From the very first moment I knew that it was not just a music genre, but a cult that I`ll fully attached to.  Up to these days I`ll never did even an inch back to my dedication. Quite the contrary.

28. And this on very personal question... What makes you to move forward in this "metal" world of fake people/bands?

C.WOLF : The inner fire I suppose and its urge to transfer it outwards.

29. What do you think is the worst scourge of nowadays u/g black metal metal? (please choose at least one)

x Youtube wankers.
Terrible. Especially this "album review" cunts. Never watched any ofcourse, but to just see it as headline is enough to turn me 50% from any album that I might have an intrest. Thanks that its happening (mostly) on new releases and not to old jewels.

x Antifa pro-equality activists playing evil anti-human black metal.
Parasites, insects and tresspassers area that normally must cause them fear and panic even by spelling its name.
Impale them on the inverted cross of death!

x Political ambiguity.
As long as its based on the ancestral doctrines and pave the way for the return of the overman and the awakening of the ancient gods of our blood, its more than welcomed!

x People calling to boicott gigs, festivals or labels for very dubious reasons.
I see nothing wrong with it. Sooner or later some people must learn of how to stand their ground and defend their ideals.

x Vinyl or Cassette buying trends.

x Masked Black Metal Bands.

x Fashionable witches on instagram.

x People asking you to do silly interviews.

For a reason that I can`t explain, the last years the number of such people is almost zero.
All those you mentioned are one and the same and can`t seperated from each other. Its habbits MODERNITY and thats why day by day, year by year I feel more and more alienated and disgusting by what its called "scene" of these days.

30. Any old "wolf" loves "morbid tales" and "to mega therion"? what about "Into the pandemonium" and "cold lake"? which one would you choose?

None of both but if I had to choose one of both then perhaps I`ll take INTO THE PANDEMONIUM. At least it has great cover artwork and two good tracks (Babylon Fell & Inner Sanctum). From other side COLD LAKE has absolutely nothing. Visually and musically.

31. Same questions go for:

That’s probably the most difficult question in this interview. How to choose from these albums when all and each of them have a special place on me?

Show no mercy (1983) / Kill 'em all (1983)
Passage to Arcturo (1991) / Worship Him (1991)
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994 recorded earlier) / Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (1994)
The Celtic Winter (1994) / ...From The Pagan Vastlands (1994)

32. Name some of the most essential greek bm album to you? (min 5-max10)

C.WOLF : Thy Mighty Contract, Crossing The Fiery Path, Eosforos, For The Glory of UR, Scarlet Evil Witching Black, Dawn of Martyrdom, His Majesty At The Swamp, The Wizard of Nerath

33. Greece bm has been one of my favorite but what about greek hard rock / heavy metal? any good bands from 70 to 90 that mainstream media forgot about?

C.WOLF : I know very few things about this part of the scene in Hellas. Never bother to check out even if at times I met various members of this bands in Metal Club visits during the 90s.

34. I guess rock and heavy metal something that you listened in your teens, did you? how do you see this heavy metal revival. I think is positive that teenagers discover albums like "made in japan", "heaven and hell", "defenders of the faith", "orgasmatron" or "show no mercy" but at the same time i feel this is too much comercial oriented I mean everything is based on reissuing old albums and selling stupid merch, isn't it?

HENKER: Not Rock for me, only unholy Heavy and evil Speed Metal! Yes, this “Heavy Metal revival” is mostly a money-oriented business stinking of modernity. Heavy Metal was a thing of the ‘80s, and those who didn’t experience this back then cannot understand its atmosphere. It was coupled with many things that existed only in the ’80s and are now gone, entombed within those who were witnesses of that era. The same goes to the early 90’s Black Metal.

35. Most influential labels of the 90s (Osmose, Peaceville...) and others like Floga Records basically are releasing repressings of old albums. If they like the old bm spirit they should focus on bands like you but they rather go for a safe bet. What do you think about it?

C.WOLF : I`ll not agree with you here. Partially you are right but on the other side, the last years they have been some really good re-releases of old stuff done in a proper way and respect towards the original release and its spirit.

36. Dreadful Relic does not have any political approach (as far as I know) What do you think about nsbm bands that change their discourse to engage a larger audience?

HENKER: If they slur NS and racism and embrace multiculture, FUCK THEM!!!!

37. Any thoughts on Graveland playing live and touring in South America?

You`ll call it better as “Graveland” as the band now has nothing to do with Graveland as it used to be in the past ( since more than 15 years or so). The guy that still shamefully call his-self as “Darken” is nothing but a caricature and a clown who betrayed his ideals for money and playing some more gigs. You see, this is what happens if you are so “gay-friendly” (aka siding with adam darski of behemoth).
I believe it’s a matter of time before this guy in order to show a more “good face” to start talking to the police and authorities.

38. I asked Aethon from Eurynomos were myths are most alive and this is what he told me "When I travel to Italy and Greece, I am surprised that some people still know a lot about history, philosophy, etc., so in a way, that tradition still seems to be alive, they cultivate it, it is their pride. Especially in Greece some people still know stories from the times before Christianity, I am always astonished about that." Do you agree? In my country people (specially younger generation) don't have a clue what was the Spanish Civil War about.

C.WOLF : I think everywhere in Europe its more or less the same. Younger generations interested more in the history or APPLE and the pursuit of the latest iphone model than in their history of their forefathers. Classic sign of endtimes!

39. I fell that after the economic crisis in Spain we go back to an economic and social period similar to late 70's but fully immersed into globalization. What about Greece? How do you think this affect music production, new bands should be more angry, more politically concerned or its better to focus on fantasy related topics?

HENKER: Over here leftism and liberalism tries to manipulate everything. The same happens to the rest of the Western world. Crush their pc games and globalization agendas with angry politically-incorrect mythography, just what H. P. Lovecraft or Robert E. Howard did. And their pathetic humanitarian political religion will perish upon the Altars of the Gods of the Abyss!!!!

40. Anything that you want to add? please use this space.

C.WOLF : For your support and above all iron patience with this interview I raise my sword to thee. Looking forward to your bloodstained scripture.

Till then....

May the Gods of Yore awake from their slumber and crush this world under their Tyrannical fist. Raise The Gallows and Hail the New Dawn!
